Our Story

A history of

The Bushel Basket Difference

The Journey of The Bushel Basket: Our Family's Dream Blossoms into Reality

In the rolling hills of rural Scotland County, a story of faith, family, and dedication, unfolds like the petals of a blooming flower. We, Richard and Sarah, were united in marriage on a beautiful day in August 2010, to begin a journey that would root our dreams in the fertile soil of Northeast MO.

Our family, a vibrant fabric woven with the laughter and energy, love and squabbles of four boys and three girls, became the heart of our home and the driving force behind our aspirations. Kelvin, Lynae, Ray, Josiah, Venisa, Ryan, and Meleah, each a unique strand in our family's fabric, contributed to the farm's rhythm, a symphony of shared experiences and collective growth.

As the children grew, so did our vision. We sought a way for the family to flourish together, for the farm to be not just a dwelling but a way of life that could sustain and nurture our growing family. In 2013, we planted the seeds of our future—200 apple trees that stood as sentinels of hope, heralding a new chapter for our family.

Three years passed, and another 200 trees joined the orchard's ranks. The addition of cider-making equipment marked the beginning of a new tradition, and soon, our crisp, refreshing apple cider graced the shelves of local grocery stores. The demand for our preservative-free Cider soared, a testament to the quality and care poured into every bottle.

The orchard, a modest venture, never did keep pace with the thirst of its patrons. We expanded our reach, sourcing apples from other orchards to quench the growing thirst. Our commitment to excellence remained unwavering, and our cider a symbol of country bounty.

In the spring of 2020, a pivotal decision was made. Richard bid farewell to his day job, And the acquisition of Weiler Egg Farm, rebranded as "The Bushel Basket," wove a new thread into our story, adding locally-sourced eggs to our offering and creating a bond with local producers.

Our narrative blossomed further in 2023 with the addition of a greenhouse, a 30x96 sanctuary of flora. Here, amidst the vibrant hues and fragrant blooms, our family discovered that the cultivation of flowers was not merely work but a way to connect with nature, to express creativity, and to contribute to the beauty of the world. Each bloom is a testament to the creativity of a loving God.

Here at The Bushel Basket we strive to stand as a beacon of what can be achieved when a family plants their dreams as a seed and tends them with faith, love, hard work and a shared vision. It is a place where the fruits of our labor are not just the products we sell but the memories we create, the family we raise, and the legacy we build.

As the seasons change and the years unfold, our family continues to write our story, one harvest, one blossom, one shared moment at a time. Our journey is a reminder that with roots firmly planted in a living faith, love, and family anything is possible. The Bushel Basket is not just a brand; it is a living narrative of a family's love, and faith in God and a testament to the beauty of dreaming together.
